The National Library of Finland´s main building is designed by Carl Ludvig Engel and the Rotunda extension is designed by Gustav Nyström.

The library was founded in 1640.

The National Library of Finland is a cultural heritage organisation that is open to all and provides nationwide services to citizens, scientific communities and other societal operators.

We secure the availability of cultural heritage published in Finland or relating to Finland as well as transmit and produce information content for research, studies, citizens and the society.

We develop services in cooperation with libraries, archives, museums and other operators.

Project to Digitise Swedish-Language Periodicals Begins

In early 2026 the National Library of Finland will launch an extensive, five-year project to digitise all Swedish-language periodicals published in Finland. The project will be carried out together with the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland (SLS) and the copyright management organisation Kopiosto, with €2.1 million in funding from six foundations.
