Project to Digitise Swedish-Language Periodicals Begins

In early 2026 the National Library of Finland will launch an extensive, five-year project to digitise all Swedish-language periodicals published in Finland. The project will be carried out together with the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland (SLS) and the copyright management organisation Kopiosto, with €2.1 million in funding from six foundations.

More than 3,000 Swedish-language periodicals have appeared in Finland since 1771. These publications span research, religion, hobbies, organisations including companies and educational institutions, humour, and annual festivities. Around a third of the collection has already been digitised, focusing on general magazines and publications for front-line soldiers.

The digitisation project launches in February 2026, starting with scholarly journals, which will be accessible by the end of the year.
