The conference served as a significant opportunity for professional dialogue and inter-institutional collaboration, creating a favourable framework for presenting recent research findings, sharing best practices, and identifying common challenges. Discussions highlighted the essential role of reading in the development of human capital, critical thinking skills, and the consolidation of a knowledge-based society.

Vera Osoianu, Deputy Director of the National Library, concluded the discussion panel by stating:

“Many kindergartens, schools, public and university libraries are implementing various reading initiatives—from projects to educational programs. However, in the absence of a shared strategic vision, these efforts remain fragmented, which hinders the creation of a coherent reader’s journey and the long-term maintenance of interest in reading. A national strategy would facilitate inter-institutional collaboration and contribute to strengthening a sustainable reading culture in society.”

Distinctive Aspects of the Conference:

  • The first day of the conference was held online, while the second day took place in person at the “Iulian Filip” District Public Library in the town of Drochia.
  • The event was part of the 8th edition of the National Program LecturaCentral, a cultural project supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Moldova. The 2025 edition’s theme was: “Promoting the national literary heritage as part of the European heritage within the campaign ‘The Writer at Home.’”
  • The conference brought together professionals from various fields: representatives of all types of libraries, academic staff from all levels of education, writers, researchers in reading sociology and related fields, professionals from the book industry, high school students, and decision-makers.
  • At the event in Drochia town, students from the 11th D grade of “B.P. Hasdeu” Theoretical High School participated, accompanied by their Romanian language and literature teacher. They had the opportunity to attend a Romanian language and literature class in a different setting—at the library—where they listened to reading advocacy messages and literary recommendations from conference participants.
  • The event featured international participation from three countries (Moldova, Romania, Spain) and was conducted in both Romanian and English.
  • Over two days, 22 presentations highlighted a wide range of topics related to reading and education.

The conference reaffirmed the transformative power of reading in shaping individuals and communities, while underlining the importance of strategic collaboration across institutions. As libraries continue to play a key role in promoting literacy and cultural identity, such international events foster shared vision and collective action for a reading-based society.
