Forty years ago, the foundations were laid for the Conference of European National Librarians as we know it today. Because in 1986, the Director of the National Library of Portugal invited his counterparts from Denmark, Spain, France, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom and the Vatican. In February 1987, the directors met for the first time.
