NUK Once Again Connected Slovenians living in Slovenia, Neighbouring Countries, and Around the World

Once again, the National and University Library (NUK) hosted the traditional gathering Welcome Home, Welcome to NUK, bringing together Slovenians from the homeland, neighboring countries, and around the world. Together, participants reflected on their shared cultural space, language, and written heritage.

The Library of All Slovenians

In her opening address, NUK Director Dr. Jana Kolar emphasized that NUK has always been the library of all Slovenians.

“Our long-standing mission is the systematic collection and preservation of the library materials of Slovenians living in neighboring regions and around the world, thereby safeguarding the nation’s complete historical memory.”

Helena Janežič, curator of the collection and organizer of the event, also highlighted the importance of the personal connections forged at such gatherings:

“It is precisely these connections that often encourage people to entrust us with materials they didn’t even realize belonged in our collection. Together, we ensure that Slovenia’s written heritage is preserved for future generations.”

Inspiring Stories and Cultural Vitality

During the round-table discussion, Dr. Helena Jaklitsch (State Secretary at the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad), Mariana Poznič (Argentina), and Erika Jazbar (from the Gorizia region) shared their experiences of living outside their homeland. They reflected on the challenges of preserving the Slovenian language, the importance of maintaining a strong sense of belonging, and the richness of a dual cultural identity.

The evening concluded with a performance by the Slovenian-Argentinian folklore group Los Tilos (“The Linden Trees”), whose name refers to Slovenia’s national tree, symbolizing the group’s roots and enduring connection to their ancestral homeland. Composed of descendants of Slovenian emigrants, the ensemble concluded its tour of Slovenia with this performance at NUK.
