The recent dossier, published by Politik & Kultur, the newspaper of the Deutscher Kulturrat (German Cultural Council), invites readers to learn more about one of Germany’s most important institutions of knowledge and memory.

It explores the history, mandate and working methods of the German National Library, whilst also looking ahead to its future: How is digitisation changing the mandate to collect and preserve? How can digital publications remain accessible in the long term? And what political and financial framework does the German National Library require to be able to fulfil its responsibilities in the future?

The 88-page dossier, containing over 40 articles by more than 50 authors, has been published as a supplement to issue 9–10/2026 of “Politik & Kultur”.
