The National Library of Greece Celebrated the 2025 European Day of Conservation-Restoration

The European Day of Conservation – Restoration is dedicated to highlighting the role of conserving antiquities and works of art and in safeguarding cultural heritage. Laboratories, museums, and archaeological sites opened their doors to the public offering presentations, themed tours, educational programmes, and lectures as well as the exploration of the “unseen” aspects of the conservator’s profession.

The National Library of Greece (NLG) opened the doors of the Conservation Laboratory on 17 and 19 October 2025 and welcomed the public, offering a unique workshop titled “Share your story. Learn how to take care of your collections”, at the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center. Participants had the opportunity to be acquainted with the work of the NLG conservators and discover the secrets of taking care of valuable items.

The NLG conservators, in cooperation with the historians from the Special Collections guided the public on an experiential journey. The participants brought along their cherished items –a book, a photograph, a document, or an artwork on paper– and shared their stories while learning how proper protection can keep their memory and value alive.

The action was carried out within the framework of the accredited Erasmus+ 2020-1-EL01-KA120-ADU-094812 project.
