On 22 April 2026, marking the birthday of Slovenian writer Zofka Kveder (1878–1926), the National and University Library (NUK) launched a new manuscript transcription project dedicated to approximately 80 of her letters.

The project represents an important milestone in the first structured collaboration between NUK and the University of Nova Gorica, combining expertise in cultural heritage, humanities research, and digital technologies. It builds on the success of NUK’s previous citizen science initiative focused on the manuscripts of Srečko Kosovel, further strengthening a growing community of engaged volunteers.

Zofka Kveder, the first Slovenian professional female writer, was a major literary figure—an author, playwright, translator, editor, and outspoken advocate of women’s equality. Her correspondence, written in several languages, forms a vital part of her legacy and offers unique insight into the cultural and social context of her time.

The project is firmly grounded in the principles of citizen science, actively involving volunteers in the transcription process and promoting shared stewardship of cultural heritage. Participants will work online using the eScriptorium platform and a handwriting recognition model developed at the University of Nova Gorica. No prior expertise is required, and training will be provided.
By continuing the “From Manuscript to Word” series, the initiative ensures broader access to manuscript collections and reinforces the role of libraries as facilitators of collaboration between research, technology, and the public. The project also contributes to the long-term accessibility of Kveder’s work through the Digital Library of Slovenia, supporting future scholarship in literature, history, and the humanities.
