On June 15, 2023 in Chisinau, Moldova, took place the 32nd edition of the scientific Symposium (with international participation) “The Bibliophile Values”. It’s a scientific event, one of the most important events in the field of bibliophile and book history within the country. It was organized by the National Library of the Republic of Moldova (NLRM) in partnership with the League of Librarians of the Republic of Moldova “Alexe Rău” and the Scientific Society of Bibliophile and Ex-libris “Paul Mihail” of Moldova.
The XXXII edition of the Symposium was entitled “The Saints Metropolitans Varlaam and Dosoftei, defenders of orthodoxy and developers of the language”. The symposium was dedicated to the 380th anniversary of Varlaam’s Cazania (Iasi, 1643), the first book printed in Moldova in Romanian, and the celebration of 350 years since the appearance of Dosoftei’s Psalter in verses (Uniev, 1673), the first versification of the psalms in Romanian language.
The purpose of the forum was focused on the research and exploitation of the mobile national heritage. The Symposium was divided in two sections: I. The Holy Hierarchs Varlaam and Dosoftei – theologians and defenders of orthodoxy; II. Bibliophile values of the cultural heritage: researches and exploitation.
The event was attended by 45 specialists (historians, librarians, researchers, museographers, teachers, archivists and clerics) from different institutions such as: the National Library of the Republic of Moldova, the Scientific Library (Institute) “Andrei Lupan”, the Institute of History of State University of Moldova, the Pedagogical University “Ion Creanga”, the University from Iasi (Romania) “Alexandru Ioan Cuza”, the Eco-Museum Research Institute “Gavrila Simion” from Tulcea (Romania), and the International Free University of the Republic of Moldova. There were made 12 communications in the fields of cultural history, museography, theology, bibliophile, book history and mobile cultural heritage from the country and abroad, in the presence of passionate book exegetes.
The National Library of Moldova participated at Symposium with the communication “The gift of the American people in the collections of the National Library of the Republic of Moldova”, which is the result of the research of books of foreign origin in the library’s collections and as well of capitalization of the results of the research of the ex-libris from the foreign book collections.
Another unique moment of the Symposium was the opening of the Exhibition of a single book – The Romanian Book of Education, which was made available to the general public for the first time. The book was printed in 1643 in Iasi by Saint Varlaam. It’s a rare copy that can be admired by the library visitors until June 30, 2023.
The Symposium had impact on:
– the development of knowledge of professional results in the field of documentary heritage research within other cultural institutions;
– the promotion of written cultural heritage;
– the development of intercultural dialogue between the institutions holding heritage collections, both within the country and from abroad.
