National Library of Ireland: Hidden Bram Stoker Story Unearthed in NLI’s Archives by Amateur Researcher

A Bram Stoker story, unexplored until now, was discovered in the National Library of Ireland’s (NLI) collections.

Brian Cleary visited the NLI on Culture Night last year and signed up for a Reader’s Ticket. With a keen interest in Bram Stoker, he used the Library’s Reading Room to research the writer’s life. During his research, Brian discovered an advertisement for Bram Stoker’s short story, Gibbet Hill (1890), which lay undiscovered by Stoker scholars until now.

Gibbet Hill, the story of its discovery, a series of artworks and a collection of writings on Stoker, supported by the Rotunda Foundation, was published on 26 October and features contributions from Roddy Doyle, Paul Murray (Stoker’s biographer), and visual artist Paul McKinley.

The proceeds will fund the Charlotte Stoker Fund for research on the prevention of acquired deafness in vulnerable newborn babies. The charity is named in memory of Stoker’s mother, who advocated for schools for the deaf in the 1860s. The National Library of Ireland is thrilled that Brian made this important discovery within their national collections.

You can now learn more about Bram Stoker’s Gibbet Hill, available as part of the NLI’s digital collection, on their website: https://www.nli.ie/news-stories/news/hidden-bram-stoker-story-unearthed-nlis-archives-amateur-researcher
