The National Library of Luxembourg (BnL) hosted the International Congress of Mobile Libraries on 5 and 6 September 2026, bringing together professionals from several countries to exchange experiences and discuss the future of mobile library services.

The programme explored a range of topics, including services for rural communities, route planning, crisis response and the social role of mobile libraries. Participants also examined future-oriented initiatives focused on community outreach, innovative service models, new technologies and sustainable mobility.

In Luxembourg, the national mobile library service operates 15 weekly routes and serves more than 80 localities across the country, helping to ensure access to library resources and cultural services for a wide audience.

The congress also provided a platform for networking, professional exchange and the sharing of best practices. Discussions highlighted the importance of cooperation and innovation in responding to changing user needs and strengthening the role of mobile libraries within local communities.

The event concluded with a public presentation of mobile libraries in Luxembourg-Kirchberg. Over the two days, participants reaffirmed a shared conviction: mobile libraries do more than transport books. They bring knowledge, culture and opportunities for social connection directly to citizens.
