The National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK), as a central institution of Croatian culture, science, and education, functions as both the national library of the Republic of Croatia and the central library of the University of Zagreb.
NSK collects, preserves, processes, makes accessible, and promotes Croatia’s rich cultural and scientific heritage in the country and abroad, and carries out scientific research and development activities aimed at building and developing the Croatian library system.

With approximately 3.6 million items, strong teams of professional staff, numerous services, and a diverse program, it has been a vital part of Croatian cultural and scientific life for more than four centuries.
The vision for the development of NSK is realised through three strategic goals:

  • Accessibility of materials, data, and library services to all user groups
  • Strengthening of Library capacities
  • Collaboration in development and innovation – and is encapsulated in the statement “Passing on ideas through time.”

30 Years of Organising the Croatian Best Book Design Competition

Since 2024, in cooperation with the Croatian Designers Association, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) has organised the annual Croatian Best Book Design competition (Hrvatska lijepa knjiga). Every year, selected Croatian titles are presented at two major European book events – the Leipzig and Frankfurt Book Fairs. To mark the 30th anniversary of NSK’s organisation of the Croatian Best Book Design competition and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the German Book Art Foundation, an exhibition will be held in the Library’s Grand Lobby from 1 July to 31 August 2026. Admission is free.
