Kathrin Brannemann is the New Director of the German National Library in Frankfurt am Main

Kathrin Brannemann took up her post as Director of the German National Library in Frankfurt am Main on 2 February 2026. The library and information scientist succeeds Ute Schwens, who has retired after more than 25 years of successful work in this role. Kathrin Brannemann is also one of the two permanent deputies to the Director General of the German National Library, Frank Scholze.

In addition to managing the Frankfurt institution, Kathrin Brannemann’s work focuses on the further development of the German National Library as an active cultural memory. Preserving cultural heritage, actively shaping digital change and consistently aligning services with the needs of society, culture and research are central elements of the German National Library’s strategy.

She stated: “It is with great pleasure and respect for the importance of the German National Library that I am taking over the management of the Frankfurt am Main site, and I look forward to shaping the strategic development and future of the German National Library together with all its employees.”
