On 25 June 2026, the National Library of Romania, in partnership with the Bucharest Metropolitan Library, hosted the conference “National Heritage and Community: The Green Library”, an event dedicated to promoting best practices in sustainability, environmental education, and the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage through libraries.

The conference brought together professionals from the library, academic, artistic, governmental, and non-governmental sectors, alongside members of the general public, creating a platform for dialogue on the interconnected relationship between cultural heritage, the environment, and local communities. Through presentations, discussions, and interactive workshops, participants explored examples of sustainability initiatives implemented by libraries, examined the environmental implications of digitalization, and reflected on the importance of preserving cultural memory for future generations.

During the first part of the event, invited speakers addressed key questions surrounding the relationship between sustainability and heritage and examined the concept of the “green library.” Their presentations highlighted the evolving role of libraries as spaces for learning, inclusion, civic engagement, and environmental responsibility. The session concluded with an open discussion and question-and-answer segment, encouraging the exchange of ideas and perspectives on some of the most pressing issues facing communities and institutions today.

The second part of the conference featured a series of workshops designed for students, librarians, and members of the wider public. These interactive activities provided participants with practical opportunities to engage with topics related to sustainability, heritage preservation, and community development, while fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing across different audiences.

The event underscored the essential role of librarians and educators as cultural mediators and facilitators of learning within their communities. By bringing together diverse stakeholders and encouraging meaningful dialogue, the conference contributed to strengthening the connection between cultural heritage, education, and sustainable development.
