The National and University Library (NUK) is Slovenia’s national library, with a core mission to collect, preserve, and provide access to the national collection of library materials, offer professional support to libraries in carrying out public services and the national bibliographic system, and participate in international library networks.
We serve as the central state library and the university library of the University of Ljubljana, the national aggregator of cultural e-content, and the home of the Digital Library of Slovenia.
We provide easy access to knowledge and culture. In collaboration with national and international libraries, we ensure access to the world’s written cultural and scientific heritage. We also work to make our materials accessible abroad, particularly for Slovenians outside the Republic of Slovenia. Our collection and services support the scientific and research work of the University of Ljubljana and other higher education institutions. We organise events, exhibitions, seminars, conferences, and other activities. Additionally, we engage in research, development, and educational initiatives in the field of librarianship.
To mark 130 years since the 1895 Ljubljana earthquake, Slovenia’s National and University Library launched a multimedia event using AI to animate archival photos. It also introduced a digital assistant trained on historical sources to deepen public engagement and explore AI’s role in culture.
