Enhancing the Global Visibility of Armenian Written Heritage

The National Library of Armenia (NLA) has taken a significant step towards strengthening the international visibility, discoverability, and accessibility of Armenia’s written cultural heritage by joining WorldCat, the world’s largest global library catalog. More than 1.6 million bibliographic records from the Armenian Library Union Catalog are now available through WorldCat, enabling researchers, students, librarians, and readers worldwide to discover the collections of Armenian libraries.

This achievement is the result of several years of systematic work initiated in November 2020, when the National Library of Armenia launched a large-scale programme to align Armenian bibliographic records with international library standards. The work included the standardisation and quality assurance of bibliographic records, enhancement of authority-controlled data for personal and corporate names and subjects, and the implementation of internationally recognised standards and practices. As a result, Armenian library data has been integrated into the international bibliographic and library information environment.

The inclusion of more than 1.6 million Armenian and non-Armenian bibliographic records in WorldCat significantly enhances the online presence and discoverability of Armenia’s written heritage. It provides international researchers and library professionals with access to bibliographic information describing a broad range of materials held in Armenian libraries, including books, periodicals, maps, musical editions, theses, and other forms of published heritage.

The initiative is particularly important for increasing the international visibility of publications produced in Armenia. By becoming discoverable through WorldCat and, consequently, through major international search engines and scholarly information environments, Armenian publications can reach a wider international audience, supporting their use in research, scholarly citation, collection development, and interlibrary cooperation.

The integration of Armenian bibliographic data into WorldCat has significance well beyond the increased discoverability of individual publications. It strengthens the integration of Armenia’s library and information infrastructure into the international bibliographic environment and creates new opportunities for scholarly communication, resource discovery, and international cooperation. The enhanced visibility of Armenian collections supports the development of Armenological studies and facilitates access to sources for researchers working in the humanities, social sciences, history, cultural studies, and related disciplines.

At the same time, the representation of Armenian publications in a major international discovery environment contributes to the wider circulation and scholarly use of the country’s intellectual output. Improved bibliographic interoperability and resource sharing can support cooperation among libraries, universities, research institutions, and cultural organisations, while creating new possibilities for interlibrary services and international collection development.

The initiative also has an important digital and cultural dimension. By making Armenian-language and Armenia-related bibliographic resources more visible within global information networks and searchable through major international search engines, WorldCat contributes to strengthening the digital presence of the Armenian language and Armenia’s documentary heritage. In this sense, participation in WorldCat represents not only a significant development in bibliographic infrastructure, but also an instrument for enhancing Armenia’s cultural diplomacy and international representation within the global knowledge ecosystem.

The project was implemented with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia, contributing to the successful integration of Armenia’s bibliographic heritage into the international library and information infrastructure.

As this initiative moves forward, the National Library of Armenia will continue to expand both the volume and quality of bibliographic data represented in WorldCat. The aim is to ensure that Armenia’s written heritage, the Armenian language, and intellectual production published in Armenia become increasingly visible, accessible, and usable for the global scientific, educational, and cultural community.

The ability to discover WorldCat records through Google and other international search engines further extends the reach of Armenian bibliographic information beyond the professional library community. In this respect, the initiative represents not only an important development in bibliographic integration and library cooperation, but also a meaningful contribution to Armenia’s digital presence and cultural diplomacy.

The integration of Armenia’s bibliographic heritage into WorldCat marks an important first step towards deeper participation in the global library and information infrastructure and opens new opportunities for the international discovery, study, and use of Armenia’s rich written cultural heritage.
