The National Library of Spain launches BNE Digital, the platform for accessing its digital heritage

The National Library of Spain has launched BNE Digital, a new platform that unifies its digital collections in a single, easy-to-use space. With access to more than 400,000 works, improved full-text search and modern viewing tools, BNE Digital offers a more intuitive way to explore the library’s heritage from any device, anywhere. Thus, the platform brings together four major collections that reflect the breadth of the Library’s holdings

  • Historical works: over 35 million digitised pages from printed books, manuscripts, drawings, maps, posters, photographs, scores and sound recordings, many freely downloadable in the public domain.
  • Hemeroteca Digital: thousands of historical and modern newspaper titles, almost 110 million pages, now searchable directly through BNE Digital while retaining its independent portal.
  • Electronic publications: digitally born content collected under Spain’s Legal Deposit Act—including audiobooks, podcasts, e-books, videos and digital scores—now exceeding 10 million pages.
  • Pre-print digital copies: files deposited by publishers, representing current editorial output and forming a fast-growing collection of more than 6 million pages that supports long-term digital preservation.

With more than 3 million documents across all its collections, BNE Digital brings together two decades of digitisation work and stands as Spain’s main gateway to its digital heritage. The platform extends the BNE’s reach beyond its physical buildings and ensures broader access for present and future generations.

As a primary source of information and knowledge, BNE Digital also serves as a key gateway to exploring and discovering our collective heritage online, making it available to be used and reused for learning, research, and the dissemination of our cultural and intellectual legacy.
