The National Library of Latvia Invited Visitors to “Restart Reading!” during Museum Night 2026

On 23 May 2026, Museum Night took place across Latvia with this year’s theme, “The Adventures of Objects”, reminding visitors that every object carries its own story and value. On this special evening, the National Library of Latvia also opened its doors to visitors, inviting everyone to “Restart Reading!” together.

A total of 1,545 visitors attended the event, with many of them visiting the library for the first time.

Books, the stories within them, and reading itself formed the core of the “Restart Reading!” event, offering visitors a shared reading experience and opportunities for discovery.

Visitors to Museum Night took part in the lively “Read Aloud Marathon”, reading excerpts from books included in the new 2026 collection of the NLL reading promotion programme “Children’s, Youth and Parents’ Jury”. The marathon was opened by NLL Director Dagnija Baltiņa, who read an excerpt from Joachim Meyerhoff’s book Var krist arī augšup (German: Man kann auch in die Höhe fallen or in English: You Can Also Fall Upwards).

For the second consecutive year, Museum Night guests were able to retreat from the noise of the city in the library’s rooftop ridge space during “Silent Reading Above the Rooftops of Riga”, immersing themselves in quiet, mindful reading and enjoying a journey through text and ambient music.

Fifteen diverse exhibitions of varying themes and scale were open during Museum Night, while families with children could spend time colouring a panoramic illustration of Old Riga and participating in creative workshops and many other engaging activities.

The NLL thanks every participant for celebrating together and sharing this special night!
