Slovenia Establishes a Centre of Excellence for Green Heritage Science, with National and University Library in Slovenia as a Partner

Within a European partnership led by the University of Ljubljana (UL), Slovenia is establishing the GreenHer Centre of Excellence for Green Heritage Science. The centre will bring together an interdisciplinary community of researchers—from archaeologists and chemists to computer scientists and conservator-restorers—who will develop new knowledge in the understanding and management of cultural heritage. The project for establishing the Centre of Excellence is led by Prof. Dr. Matija Strlič (UL), with the National and University Library (Slovenia) participating as a project partner.

The vision of the GreenHer Centre of Excellence is to become a leading hub for research and innovation in heritage science. In collaboration with international partners, it will connect many established Slovenian researchers in the field. By integrating the humanities and social sciences with natural sciences and engineering, the centre will support strongly interdisciplinary research and innovation in the discovery, understanding, and management of cultural heritage.

NUK is among the key project partners and will contribute through its researchers to a range of pilot projects, from the development of green materials and conservation–restoration processes to the establishment of a new facility for the long-term preservation of collections. NUK will also play an important role in the evaluation and management of heritage, the development of a Heritage Digitisation Laboratory, and the creation of a shared Slovenian cloud for cultural heritage, explained Dr. Jasna Malešič of NUK and the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology at the University of Ljubljana, who is involved in the establishment of the Centre of Excellence.
