Reconstruction and Renovation of the SNL Literary Museum building

On 20 September 2025, the Slovak National Library (SNL) began implementing a project for the reconstruction and renovation of the SNL Literary Museum building in Martin with a budget of €13,544,570.67. The historic building in which the museum is located was completed in 1863. For the Slovaks, it is still a symbol of the ancient struggle for national emancipation. The new permanent exhibition should be finished by the end of 2028 and it will bring the museum into the 21st century.

The project is co-financed by the European Union through the Slovakia Programme with the amount of €11,512,885.07, the remaining €2,031,685.60 will be allocated from the state budget.

The complete reconstruction will preserve this 150-year-old national cultural monument for future generations. The museum will no longer just present history. New technologies will transform it into an interactive exhibition in which visitors will explore literature and book culture through experiences. Translations will increase the interest of foreign visitors. The building will offer pupils and students a great space for education using the Slovak National Library’s collections, accessible online in the digital library. There will also be a new space for domestic and foreign/international exhibitions and a museum collection with items that cannot find a place in the new exhibition, therefore finding a better way of storing them in expanded and modern deposits.

The historic building in which the museum is located is right in the centre of the city of Martin, which is considered the cultural centre of Slovaks and is easily accessible to domestic and foreign visitors. It is also a workplace that presents the results of research and development of the Slovak National Library. By combining the history of the museum and the Digital Library and Digital Archive project, which the SNK implemented in 2012-2015, a modern cultural institution of the 21st century will be created.
