From 14 to 16 September 2026, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) hosted the second transnational meeting of partners in the Opportunities for People Through Equity and Networking (OPEN) project, funded through the Erasmus+ programme. The gathering also provided an opportunity for the CENL Equity, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EEDI) Network Group to meet in person.
The meeting brought together representatives of the national libraries participating in the OPEN project. Attendees included Rosemarie van der Veen-Oei and Susannah Bain from the National Library of the Netherlands, the project coordinator; Kalina Yordanova Ivanova and Bojidara Ivanova Ilieva from the National Library of Bulgaria; Florian Forestier and Hélène Berges from the National Library of France; Eoin McCarney from the National Library of Ireland; and members of the NSK team: Dunja Marija Gabriel, Jagoda Ille, Jelena Šančić, Sonja Pigac and Petra Pancirov. The meeting also welcomed Mojca Rupar-Korošec from the National and University Library of Slovenia and Alison Stevenson from the National Library of Scotland. Titti Matsson and Hanna Eriksson Gylje from the National Library of Sweden, together with Catherine Lombarts from the National Library of the Netherlands, participated online.
The participants were welcomed by NSK Director General Dr Ivanka Stričević, who highlighted that diversity, inclusion, equity and equality are fundamental values of contemporary heritage institutions. Committed to promoting democratic principles and individual freedoms, libraries play an important role in ensuring that these values are reflected in all aspects of their work, services and engagement with the communities they serve.
Running from 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2028, the OPEN project aims to strengthen equity, equality, diversity and inclusion across European libraries. Through international cooperation, the project supports the development of more inclusive library collections and metadata, promotes cultural awareness, and helps libraries expand their reach to underserved communities. By fostering inclusive practices and knowledge exchange, OPEN contributes to strengthening social cohesion and ensuring that libraries remain welcoming and accessible spaces for all.
Alongside project discussions and working sessions, participants had the opportunity to learn more about NSK’s history, collections and services. The programme also included a guided tour of Zagreb, offering insights into the rich cultural and historical heritage of Croatia’s capital.
