The National Library of Spain adds to its collection items valued at €1,411,275 in 2024
The National Library of Spain, with the aim of enriching and updating Spain’s bibliographic and documentary heritage, acquires new items of unique value each year to complete this heritage and ensure its preservation and dissemination. In addition to its existing collections, the Library purchases rare and special documents using its own institutional budget, incorporates acquisitions made by the Ministry of Culture on its behalf, and receives works donated by individuals and institutions. In 2024, acquisitions reached a total value of €1,411,275.78, while donations amounted to €461,275.
Using its own budget and in line with its mission, the National Library of Spain purchases each year a wide range of documents that contribute to the growth and modernisation of Spain’s heritage. In 2024, the Library acquired 238 documents through direct purchase, for a total value of €167,579.51. Among them are unique or very rare works with very few known copies.
In addition, the Ministry of Culture made significant acquisitions in 2024 for the National Library of Spain’s collections, totaling €1,243,696.27, resulting in the addition of 3,126 items to its holdings.
The year 2024 was also a strong year for donations: 82,628 items were received, 31% more than in 2023, valued at €461,275, according to estimates by the Library’s technical staff.
A total of 414 donation cases were processed, with contributions from 432 donors. The origin of the donations breaks down as follows: 44 from Spanish public institutions, 166 from foreign donors, and 222 from Spanish individuals or residents in Spain.
