The new strategy follows extensive consultation with key partners and stakeholders in the public, libraries, culture and tourism sectors, as well as staff from all parts of the Library, and Board members.

“The Next Chapter” builds upon the successes delivered in the previous strategy, “Reaching People”, during which visitor numbers to its George IV Bridge building reached record levels and the Library continued to enjoy a steady increase in membership.

“The Next Chapter” focuses on building on its strong foundations to prepare for the next 100 years, through Responsible Stewardship, Connection and Sustainability. Areas of focus will include working more with young people, further enhancing its already strong track record on sustainability, having more of a presence around the country, and the redevelopment of its main building on George IV Bridge.

National Librarian Amina Shah said:

“This is a pivotal moment for the Library in more ways than one. We are delivering an ambitious programme of events and programmes to mark our centenary, which will continue well into 2026. People around the country are experiencing their national library’s presence where they live, and this is something we will seek to expand in the near future.

“In future-proofing our national collections and access to them, our George IV Bridge building needs to be modernised in ways that are fit for purpose. With current and future audiences in mind, this means investing in technology, suitable storage for the collections, and making our spaces as welcoming, inspiring and inclusive as possible. We have a lot to do, and we can’t wait to get started.”

The National Library’s strategy for 2025–2030, ‘The Next Chapter’, is available to read in both English and Gaelic on our website.
