Libraries Under Debate – “Subject indexing in transition: From Rameau’s reform to automatic indexing”

11 Mar 2020

Room 70

On the occasion of the release of works from the Libraries collection, the BnF organizes meetings in collaboration with the Éditions du Cercle de la librairie. Étienne Cavalié, Head of Metadata Engineering at the BnF, presents his latest book, “Material indexing in transition: from Rameau’s reform to automatic indexing”.

By Étienne Cavalié , librarian, head of the Metadata Engineering department of the BnF, Bruno Menon , lecturer at Paris 8 University and  Ewa Nieszkowska , documentary IT project manager at SCD at Paris Est Créteil Val- de-Marne. Debate moderated by Martine Poulain , director of the Libraries collection

The Indexing of materials in transition retraces and explains, 40 years after the creation of the documentary language Rameau, the changing news around the questions of indexing in the world of libraries and the professions of information-documentation. Why reform the Rameau documentary language? What should it be used for? What problems is it supposed to solve? What impacts will it have on library catalogs? How to anticipate future developments, and solve the problems that will arise from them? Based on these current issues on a process still underway, The Indexing material in transitionexplores all the mutations at work around subject indexing: the evolution of bibliographic and authority data, the evolution of interfaces and services, the potential offered.
