The 1956 Hungarian uprising is one of the defining events in the collective memory of both Hungary and Austria. The at first peaceful protests against the communist regime and the Soviet occupation ended on November 4, with a military invasion by the Soviet Union. Around 200,000 Hungarians fled across the initially open border to Austria, where they were granted political asylum and received widespread support from the population.

Media coverage played a central role in mobilising international aid, and images from border regions, reception camps and relief operations were seen around the world. The Austrian National Library holds an extensive photographic collection relating to the year 1956 and is presenting a selection of previously little-known photographs that impressively document the events.
