A New Space for Cultural Dialogue – the National Library Cinematheque

The National Library of the Republic of Moldova is consolidating its role as a promoter of national culture by launching the Library Cinematheque – a project dedicated to the promotion of local films inspired by national literature.

By launching the Cinematheque, the National Library aims to promote the cinematographic heritage and create a meeting space between film, literature, and the public. The role of a cinematheque within a library is to expand access to audio-visual cultural resources, to preserve and promote cinematographic creations, and to stimulate interdisciplinary dialogue.

In this regard, the institution plans to organise monthly thematic screenings, which will include: feature films, archival film retrospectives, documentary films, and undergraduate works by students and young filmmakers.

The first event took place on March 24, 2026, when the feature film “Și va fi…” was presented, directed by Valeriu Jereghi. Produced in 1992 as a co-production between Romania, the Republic of Moldova, and the Union of Filmmakers of the USSR, the film represents an emblematic work of Moldovan cinema. “And There Will Be…” is the only feature film from the Republic of Moldova included in the Official Selection of the Cannes International Film Festival, in the “Un Certain Regard” section, and was also awarded the Grand Prix at the Costinești National Film Festival. The film offers a profound artistic vision of a post-apocalyptic world, exploring, in a metaphorical manner, themes such as survival, memory, and the fragility of civilization.

At the same time, the National Library of the Republic of Moldova intends to develop cultural and educational partnerships with relevant institutions in the field, such as the National Archives Agency, the Moldova-Film studio, the Telefilm Chișinău studio, and the Academy of Music, Theatre and Fine Arts.

Through this initiative, the National Library reaffirms the importance of promoting cultural heritage and opens new perspectives for the promotion of film art in the Republic of Moldova.
