The treasures preserved in the collections of the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) are featured in In the Beginning Was the Kingdom, a joint exhibition organised under the auspices of the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media as the central event marking over a millennium since the establishment of the Croatian Kingdom.

Particular emphasis is placed on the legal and symbolic continuity of the Kingdom, whose existence—documented, among other sources, in a 925 letter from Pope John X—validated and shaped the idea of statehood throughout the centuries. This unbroken continuity spans the period from the creation of the Croatian state in the early Middle Ages to Croatia’s later existence under various foreign dynasties.

Co-organised by the Croatian State Archives, the Croatian History Museum, the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments in Split, and the National and University Library in Zagreb, the exhibition will remain on view at the Klovićevi dvori Gallery until 15 February 2026.
