On 5 May 2026, marking the Day of the Macedonian Language, the National Library of North Macedonia celebrated not only a language, but a living identity carried through generations.
Keynote speaker Dr Ganka Cvetanova highlighted the enduring power of language as a foundation for cultural continuity. A dedicated message by Dr Goce Cvetanovski reinforced this vision—reminding everyone present that language is memory, resilience, and belonging.
For the first time, the library also presented the platform Vesnici.mk, offering readers and researchers access to a comprehensive digital database of North Macedonian newspapers across time—opening new pathways to explore the collective past. Zorica Jakovleska Spirovska, head of the sector, introduced the platform to the audience, presenting it as a new digital resource for the Library’s serial publications.
As Director Nikchevski emphasised, “As a national library, we remain committed to preserving this invaluable treasure, while also advancing it and bringing it closer to all generations. In a time of intense social and technological change, our mission carries even greater weight—to ensure that the Macedonian language continues to evolve, is used with dignity, and retains its rightful place in the modern world.
Language is our home—the more we nurture it, the stronger and richer it becomes. Today, as we live in an era of rapid change and globalisation, our responsibility is even greater: to cultivate, enhance, and pass on the Macedonian language to future generations. The Macedonian language stands as the foundation of our national identity and cultural continuity.”
