Miroslav Cipár – Icons of Slovak illustration

November 5 to December 1, 2019

A legend among illustrators, graphic artists, painters and designers – known to children as well as adults. Originally published and never published works by Miroslav Cipár (* 1935) will come to life at the Literary Museum of the Slovak National Library between November 6 and December 1, 2019.

In the collection of the Literary Museum SNK we have 1 342 illustrations by Miroslav Cipár to 32 books. “About one fifth of them were donated to the Cipar Museum in 1974 and 1985. Among our collections we will find rare unpublished variants of the book by Ľubomír Feldek Flying the Ball of Cannon of 1968,” stressed Adriana Brázdová, one of the curators of the exhibition. Miroslav Cipár illustrated more than 350 books, completed children’s magazines Včielka, Zornička and Slniečko and created more than three hundred logotypes, which are still used today. For example, the BIB logo, which promotes the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava all over the world.

The exhibition will show Cipár’s works from 1962 to 1984, both big and small, and will not miss the well-known children’s characters who remember several generations – Joško Mrkvička, Osmijanko, or Mirko Fazulka. “From these titles will be presented at the exhibition a selection of original illustrations for 11 book titles that come from the collections of the Literary Museum SNK, such as Osmijanko speaks 8×8 = 64 new fairy tales, Boy paints rainbow by Milan Rúfus, 5 x Botafogo by Lubomir Feldek, from Klára Jarunková, ” A. Brázdová added.
