In May 2025, the National Library of the Republic of Moldova, supported by CENL’s Skills and Knowledge Exchange Bursary, carried out a successful professional visit to the National Library “Saints Cyril and Methodius” of Bulgaria. The visit marked a significant milestone in the cooperation between the two institutions, resulting in the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation and the opening of a “Book Corner of the Republic of Moldova” in Sofia. These efforts aim to promote cultural exchange, strengthen bilateral ties, and enhance the visibility of Moldovan heritage in Europe.
The National Library of the Republic of Moldova successfully applied for CENL’s Skills and Knowledge Exchange Bursary, aiming to strengthen professional ties between the two institutions and foster the exchange of best practices in library management, cultural promotion, and international collaboration.
As part of this initiative, Elena Pintilei, General Director of the National Library of the Republic of Moldova, conducted a professional visit to the National Library “Saints Cyril and Methodius” of Bulgaria from 6–10 May 2025. The visit included a series of significant events and collaborative efforts that marked a new chapter in the partnership between the two national libraries:
On 09 May 2025, the National Library of the Republic of Moldova, in partnership with the National Library “Saints Cyril and Methodius” of Bulgaria, officially inaugurated the “Book Corner of the Republic of Moldova”—a dedicated space highlighting the literature, art, and history of Moldova.
“There is symbolism in today’s opening, because 34 years ago the Parliament of Moldova decided to sign a Declaration of independence of the state, and today we are opening the 34th corner within the National Library [of Bulgaria… We have strengthened our cooperation by signing this Memorandum of Cooperation, in which the main emphasis is on cultural exchange, exchange of experience, sharing of resources and a host of additional activities, if desired by both libraries,” said Assoc Prof Dr Kalina Ivanova, Director of the National Library “Saints Cyril and Methodius”.
The initiative, carried out with support from the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Sofia, aims to promote Moldovan cultural values and reinforce intercultural dialogue. The “Book Corner” features a representative collection of classical and contemporary Romanian literature, works on Moldova’s historical and artistic heritage, scientific publications, and relevant documentary materials.
The inauguration was attended by representatives of both national libraries, Moldovan embassy officials, cultural dignitaries, and members of the Moldovan community in Sofia. During the event, the Memorandum of Cooperation was signed, outlining joint commitments to future exchanges of publications, thematic exhibitions, conferences, and collaborative library and cultural initiatives.
Conclusion
Through this landmark visit and the creation of the “Book Corner,” the National Library of the Republic of Moldova reaffirms its role as a cultural ambassador and a proactive member of the European library community. By strengthening institutional ties, encouraging intercultural dialogue, and promoting shared values, this collaboration contributes meaningfully to the broader goals of CENL and to the unity of cultural institutions across Europe.
