About the event

The National and University Library in Zagreb hosts the exhibition of the National Library of Bulgaria “Books, directions, audiences” 3rd to 20th July, 2018. The opening ceremony held on 3rd July attracted interest of university lecturers, diplomats, representatives of the Ministry of Culture of Croatia, scientists and researchers of Slavonic and Bulgarian studies. Welcome speeches were given by Mrs Antoaneta Totomanova, Deputy Director of the NLB and Mrs Tatjana Petric, Director of the NUL in Zagreb. The exposition comprising 16 panels displaying the most valuable items from the holdings of the NLB was presented by Mrs Boyana Mincheva, Archivist at Manuscripts and Old Books Department, NLB. The official opening of the exhibition was announced by Her Excellency Mrs Tanya Dimitrova, Bulgarian Ambassador to Croatia. The opening ceremony included a performance by trio Zorja of traditional Bulgarian folk songs.

Excerpts from the opening speech of Mrs Tatijana Petrić, Director General of the National and University Library in Zagreb:

“I am extremely glad that our users, staff members and the entire Croatian public will have the opportunity to see in our Library a selection of valuable documents from three collections of the National Library of Bulgaria”Manuscripts and Old Printed Books”, “Oriental Collections” and “Bulgarian Historical Archives”.

“This exhibition is the results of a long-standing cooperation of our two national libraries, and a continuation of strengthening and promotion of hundreds yearlong connections and cultural cooperation between Bulgaria and Croatia.”

The National television of Croatia provided in-depth coverage of the opening ceremony through interviews and video. A day after the event more than 20 reports and publications in electronic and print media were available online.

The exhibition travelled to Zagreb with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of Croatia and CENL; as well as with the collaboration of the Bulgarian Embassy in Zagreb and the Croatian-Bulgarian Friendship Association.

About the exhibition

The exhibition titled “Books. Directions. Audiences.” of the National Library of Bulgaria comprising 16 posters shows a selection of some of t

he oldest and most valuable documents from three of the special collections housed at the Library: Manuscripts and Old Books; Oriental Collections containing titles and documents in Ottoman Turkish, Persian and Arabic; Bulgarian Historical Archives. The exhibition brings together a rich variety of manuscripts on parchment and paper, early printed books, illuminated and richly decorated texts, archival documents and images in Glagolithic and Cyrillic script, Latin, Ottoman Turkish, Greek, Persian, Bulgarian, Armenian etc. languages. They are ranging in date from 10th to 20th century. The documents included reflect the richness and diversity of the collections held at the National Library of Bulgaria.
