Visit from the Director of the National Library of Serbia to the National Library of Ireland

The aims and objectives of the project

The basic idea behind was to learn more about the National Library of Ireland in general, and particularly about the two projects: Capital Development Project and the Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI). Behind these excellent projects are the valuable and inspiring partnerships as the examples of good practices for national libraries’ projects.

Dates of the visit

11–13 March 2025

Overview

During my three-day stay in Dublin, I had the unique opportunity to meet colleagues from the National Library of Ireland and discuss the challenges national libraries face today with my esteemed colleague, Dr. Audrey Whitty.

I was honoured to receive a guided tour of the library from Dr. Whitty, during which she provided firsthand insights into the NLI’s key development initiatives. Our discussions focused on the Capital Development Project, service delivery, and collection management. We also explored the NLI’s Strategic Organisational Priorities for 2025, as approved by the NLI Board on February 27.

Additionally, we exchanged thoughts on NLI exhibitions, both physical and online, and I had the pleasure of visiting Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again. https://www.nli.ie/exhibitions-events/exhibition-seamus-heaney-listen-now-again.

On my second day in Dublin, I dedicated my time to the Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI). My program included a meeting and guided tour with Mr. David Cleary, MoLI’s Director & CEO.

The third day was reserved for Trinity College Dublin, where I had the opportunity to visit the Old Library and view the Book of Kells. One of the most memorable parts of the visit was my experience at the Trinity Centre for Literary and Cultural Translation, which left a lasting impression on me.

The outcomes of the project

As the National Library of Serbia considers launching a project called The House of Book, which will incorporate elements of a literature museum, MoLI’s story holds particular significance for our future initiative.

At the suggestion of Mrs. Whitty, we are now planning my second visit to the NLI in Dublin, where I will deliver a lecture on Serbian history and Nikola Tesla – no later than next year.
