Enhancing metadata workflows

The aims and objectives of the project

The project aimed to enhance metadata workflows at the National Library of Latvia by learning from KBR’s approaches to bibliographic data management, metadata quality, and innovative tools. The visit focused on exchanging knowledge, exploring AI-driven cataloguing, and establishing connections for future collaboration.

Dates of the visit

24-26 March 2025

Overview

During the visit to KBR, both teams introduced their institutions and shared insights into key projects through a series of one-on-one meetings. These discussions focused primarily on improving cataloguing processes – exploring both AI-assisted methods and more traditional techniques to enhance data quality in library systems.

A significant part of the exchange was dedicated to learning about KBR’s ongoing projects, including Beltrans and MetaBelgica, which provided valuable perspectives on metadata workflows and linked data applications. In turn, the Latvian team presented the Digital Library of Latvia and the national Digital Cultural Heritage platform, showcasing efforts in accessibility and innovation.

In addition to knowledge sharing, the Latvian team toured KBR’s Coins and Medals department and visited the Google Books digitisation team, gaining insights into both heritage preservation and mass digitisation workflows. The visit also included discussions on research data management and AI-related projects, offering mutual inspiration for future collaborations.

The outcomes of the project

  • The exchange fostered a deeper understanding of shared challenges and sparked ideas for future collaboration.
  • Parallels between KBR’s MetaBelgica and Latvia’s Reference Data System (ATS) were identified.
  • The visit also inspired the National Library of Latvia to explore new tools for data quality control.
  • Professional networks were strengthened, and meaningful connections were built.
